How to Use
Take as directed by your doctor. Bontril is usually taken once is usually
taken once a day before breakfast on an empty stomach. Do not crush, chew
or open tablets. Swallow them whole. Do not take Bontril longer than directed
by your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects of taking Bontril include blurred vision, dizziness,
dry mouth, sleeplessness, irritability, stomach upset or constipation. Contact
your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following more serious
side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your
throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); an irregular
heartbeat or high blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about any side effect
that seems unusual or concerns you.
Precautions
Talk to your doctor about your complete medical history especially if you
have high blood pressure, an over-active thyroid, glaucoma, diabetes or
emotional problems. Bontril is habit forming. You can become physically
and psychologically dependent on Bontril, and withdrawal effects may occur
if you stop taking it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use. Talk
to your doctor about stopping Bontril gradually. Consult with your doctor
if you think you may be pregnant or are breast feeding.
Drug Interactions
Talk to your doctor before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines,
including herbal products, especially if you take high blood pressure medicine.
You cannot take Bontril if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
(MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine
(Nardil) recently. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact
with Bontril.
Notes
For maximum effects, this must be used in conjunction with a diet and exercise
program. Do not share Bontril with others for whom it was not prescribed,
since they may have a problem that is not effectively treated by this drug.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Bontril, take the dose as soon as you remember. However,
if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed
dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double
dose. Taking a dose late in the day will cause insomnia.
